For thousands of years, people have held festivities and rituals at this time of year to celebrate the end of the dark time and a return to the light. In this time, honouring the return of light into the world, we use the spiral to represent the seasonal rhythms as well as representing the contemplative journey we take to find our own inner “light.” The beginning of the path marks the summer solstice. As we spiral inward, it represents moving towards and through autumn, where the days grow shorter. The very centre of the spiral symbolizes winter solstice: the darkest time of the year. Here we pause at the centre before we spiral back outward through spring toward the summer solstice.

The journey each person takes through the spiral also represents an inner journey to find their own “light” within. In the very centre of ourselves, we discover our own beauty, strength, insight, and gifts that we offer the world. We then turn from this discovery within and carry our gifts of radiance back out into the world. The spiral is one of the most ancient symbols cherished by humans and it is abundant in nature. It symbolizes new life, growth, journey, peace, new beginnings, harmony and balance. And so, we will create an Advent Spiral as a sign of our journey through the turns of this year leading us through the dark to the light of the One who is the Light of the World.

Join us for a special evening of wonder on Winter Solstice, 21st December at 4.00pm where we will first gather in the sanctuary and then move outside to walk the spiral. Please wear warm clothes and prepare for whatever the weather will be.
