Prayer of Confession       Edward Hays (adapted)

One:  O sacred season of autumn, be our teacher, for we wish to learn the virtue of contentment.
All:    We live in a society that is ever restless, always eager for more mountains to climb, seeking happiness through more and more possessions.
One:  As children of our culture, we are seldom truly at peace with what we have.

All:    Teach us to take stock of what we have been given and what  we have received; may we know that it is enough,
One:  that our striving can cease in the abundance of God’s grace.

silent prayer of confession

Assurance of Grace

God knows that we are rich beyond measure.  Let us therefore take pleasure in God’s great bounty and delight in the simple things of life, which are the true sources of joy.

Passing of the Peace
(please unmute and share the peace with one another)

          One:      The peace of Christ be with you!

          All:        And also with you!

Reader: By the gift of your Spirit, calm and quiet our souls that we may hear your Word today and be lifted up to walk with you. In Christ’s name, we pray. Amen

First Reading: Jeremiah 29:1, 4-7 (NRSV) Reader: Nancy Hetherington Peirce

These are the words of the letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the remaining elders among the exiles, and to the priests, the prophets, and all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon. Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.

Psalm 66 VU#784        Reader: Nancy Hetherington Peirce

Make a joyful noise to God, all the earth;

   Sing to the Honour of God’s name;

          Make glorious the praise of God.

How awesome are your deeds!

So great is your strength, your foes wilt before you.

          For all the world shall worship you,

          Shall sing to you and praise your name.

O come and see what God has done,

A work that is awesome to all earth’s children.

          God turned the sea into dry land;

          They crossed the river on foot.

There we rejoiced in God,

Who rules in power forever,

          Whose eyes keep watch on the nations.

          Let not the rebellious lift up their heads.

Bless our God, all people,

And let the sound of praise be heard.

          God has preserved us among the living,

          And kept our feet from stumbling.

For you, O God, have tested us;

You have tried us as silver is tried.

          You led us into the desert,

          You laid a burden upon our back,

You let sickness furrow our brow,

We passed through fire and water;

          But you brought us out to a land of plenty.

Gospel Reading       Reader: Nancy Hetherington Peirce

Reader: God be with you.

All:    And also with you

Reader:  The Good News of Jesus Christ according to Luke

All:     Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Luke 17:11-19 (NRSV)

On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee. As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their distance, they called out, saying, ‘Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!’ When he saw them, he said to them, ‘Go and show yourselves to the priests.’ And as they went, they were made clean. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. He prostrated himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus asked, ‘Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?’ Then he said to him, ‘Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well.’

       Reader: This is the Gospel of Christ.

       All:     Praise be to Jesus Christ

Reflection: “Come and See What God Has Done”

Silent Reflection

Hymn: It’s a Song of Praise to the Maker          MV #30

1 It’s a song of praise to the Maker,

the thrush sings high in the tree.

It’s a song of praise to the Maker,

the gray whale sings in the sea,

and by the Spirit you and I

can join our voice to the holy cry

and sing, sing, sing to the Maker too.

2 It’s a call of life to the Giver,

when waves and water-falls roar.

It’s a call of life to the Giver,

when high tides break on the shore,

And by the Spirit you and I

can join our voice to the holy cry

and sing, sing, sing to the Maker, too.

3 It’s a hymn of love to the Lover;

bumble bees hum along.

It’s a hymn of love to the Lover;

the summer breeze joins the song,

and by the Spirit you and I

can join our voice to the holy cry

and sing, sing, sing to the Maker too.

4 It’s a chorus of all creation;

sung by all living things.

It’s a chorus of all creation;

a song the universe sings,

and by the Spirit you and I

can join our voice to the holy cry

and sing, sing, sing to the Maker too.

A New Creed

Let us affirm our faith . . .

We are not alone,

    we live in God’s world.

 We believe in God:

    who has created and is creating,

    who has come in Jesus,

       the Word made flesh,

       to reconcile and make new,

    who works in us and others

       by the Spirit.

We trust in God.

We are called to be the Church:

    to celebrate God’s presence,

    to live with respect in Creation,

    to love and serve others,

    to seek justice and resist evil,

    to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen,

       our judge and our hope.

In life, in death, in life beyond death,

    God is with us.

We are not alone.

    Thanks be to God.

Prayers of the People     Paddy Waymark

One:  God of Truth

All:    Hear Our Prayers

Lord’s Prayer
            Our Father in heaven,

            hallowed be your name,

            your kingdom come,

            your will be done

            on earth as in heaven.

            Give us today our daily bread.

            Forgive us our sins

            as we forgive those who sin against us.

            Save us from the time of trial

            and deliver us from evil,

            for the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours,

            now and for ever.  Amen.

Offering               Quentin Chin (United Church of Christ)

We give in grateful thanksgiving for all that God has given us.
In the upside-down world of the gospel, we measure our wealth not by what we have, but what we can give away.  Let us give away generously, in this offering, to bless your church, your people, your creation.

Doxology: Grant Us, God, the Grace                                       VU #540

Grant us, God, the grace of giving,

with a spirit large and free,

That ourselves and all our living

we may offer faithfully.

Offering Prayer       Ana Gobledale (Worship Words, adapted)

One:  Great Spirit, for the beauty of the earth, we give thanks.

All:    For the streaks of morning sun, we give thanks.

          For the warmth of family close, we give thanks.

One:  Power of Love, link us together in love.

All:    Shower us with laughter, and create in us a commitment

          to re-kindle your kin-dom here and now.

Hymn: For the Fruit of All Creation   VU #227

1 For the fruit of all creation,

thanks be to God.

For these gifts to every nation,

thanks be to God.

For the ploughing, sowing, reaping,

silent growth while we are sleeping,

future needs in earth's safe-keeping,

thanks be to God.

2 In the just reward of labour,

God's will is done.

In the help we give our neighbour,

God's will is done.

In our worldwide task of caring

for the hungry and despairing,

in the harvests we are sharing,

God's will is done.

3 For the harvests of the Spirit,

thanks be to God.

For the good we all inherit,

thanks be to God.

For the wonders that astound us,

for the truths that still confound us,

most of all that love has found us,

thanks be to God.
